Biographical notes on Mario Rodríguez
Ramírez by Luis E Ramos Guadalupe. A briefly
biography about Mario Rodríguez Ramírez (1911 - 1996), is presented. He made a
remarkable contribution to Cuban Tropical Meteorology. He reached doctoral level in
Physical-Chemistry Sciences (1941) and Physical-Mathematics (1942), and got Master of Arts
in Meteorology at University of California (1947).
Rodríguez was director of Institute of Meteorology of Cuba (1965 - 1977). He was know in
several countries of Europe and America because its "Vortex Theory of
Hurricanes". He worked on the introduction and aplication in Cuba of news forecasting
methods, reorganization of National Meteorological Service, setting up an extensive net of
radars and meteorological stations, and the first equippement for reception of
meteorological satellites photographs. One of his most sounded successes was the creation
of the Meteorology School, with a tradition of high-level graduated students.
