Introduction.

The winter season takes place in Cuba within the so called not very rainy period, which spans from October until May and in which cold fronts (CF) affect the Cuban archipelago, although these synoptic systems can also be present in the months of September and June (Rodríguez et al, 1984; González, 1999).

Cold fronts in Cuba present great variability, not only from one month to another but also from one winter season to another. In agreement to that, the total number of cold fronts that affects the Cuban archipelago oscillates between 11 and 35. These are the minimum and maximum values, respectively that have been registered in 85 seasons studied; while for the monthly variability they have been observed to range from zero to nine (González, 1999). In this summary the main characteristics of the 2000-2001 winter season are presented.
