ABSTRACT.

The behavior of the most intense and disastrous hurricanes in Cuba during the last two centuries is investigated. Most of all intense hurricanes occur in October and they come from the Caribbean Sea. An important multiannual variability was observed. The incidence of intense hurricanes has decreased during the second half of the twentieth century. Eight of these storms were responsible for great natural disasters in Cuba causing over one hundred fatalities. Six of them were characterized as very intense hurricanes
