In this work the variations and trends experimented by the tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic during the period 1886 – 1999 are studied. In addition, cyclonic activity mean behavior in the months that conformed a season (June – November) and the behavior on the oceanic area, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Bahamas area are also included. A large inter - annual variability is manifested in each area. Since the beginning of the 30s, tropical cyclones of the Atlantic basin had showed a trend to increase. This trend is given fundamentally by the increase of the tropical cyclones in the more active quarter of the season (August – October). In general, cyclonic activity is recovered from the decrease presented in 70s and 80s, but the hurricane destructive potential isn’t yet recovered. The tropical cyclone multi - decade variations in the Atlantic respond to solar activity variations, primary energetic source of the atmospheric process.
